A bookmark saves a link to a web page so you can return without searching for it again. It is useful for a recipe, a local club’s website or a guide you want to finish later.

This guide covers Chrome and Microsoft Edge on a computer, and Safari on a Mac. Edge calls its saved links favourites; you may see the spelling Favorites in its menus. Start with one page you recognise and practise opening it again.
Save a page in Google Chrome
- Open Chrome and visit the page you want to keep. If you want a particular article, open that article rather than saving the website’s home page.
- Click the star to the right of the address bar at the top of the window.
- Check the saved bookmark. To find it again, open the three-dot menu → Bookmarks and lists → Show all bookmarks, then select it.
For one-click access, choose three-dot menu → Bookmarks and lists → Show bookmarks bar. This displays a row for bookmarks below the address bar.
To give a saved page a clearer name, open Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark manager. Use the bookmark’s three-dot menu and choose Edit. A short name such as “Library opening hours” is easier to recognise than a long page title.
These controls are covered in Google’s bookmark instructions.
Save a page in Microsoft Edge
- Visit the page in Edge.
- Click the Add this page to favorites button in the address bar.
- Change the name if needed, choose the folder where you want to keep it, then select Done.
To return to it, open Settings and more (the three dots), then Favorites, and find your saved page. Microsoft’s guide to adding favourites shows the relevant controls.
Want your favourites visible below the address bar? Go to Settings and more → Settings → Appearance → Toolbar. Under Favorites, choose Always. Microsoft also offers Only on new tabs if you prefer the bar to stay out of the way while reading. See its favourites bar instructions.
Save a page in Safari on Mac
- Open the website in Safari.
- Click the Share button in the toolbar and choose Add Bookmark to. Some versions label this Add Bookmark.
- Choose a folder and give the bookmark a name you will recognise.
- Click Add.
To find it later, open Safari’s sidebar using the toolbar button, then select Bookmarks. Look in the folder you chose. You can manage saved links through Bookmarks → Edit Bookmarks.
Apple explains saving, finding and organising links in its Safari bookmark guide.
Make sure your bookmark works
Before closing the original page, open another tab and try the bookmark. Does it take you to the exact article or just the home page? If it opens the wrong place, return to the page you meant to keep and save that address instead.
A bookmark is a link, not a saved copy of the page. The website may change or remove the content. It also does not save unfinished form entries or guarantee you will remain signed in.
If you cannot find a saved page
- Use the same browser. A link saved in Chrome will not automatically appear in Safari or Edge.
- Check the folder. The bookmark may be in a folder rather than on the visible bar.
- Check the browser profile. If several people use the computer, make sure you have opened your own profile.
- Do not assume it has reached your phone. Sharing bookmarks between devices depends on the browser’s account and synchronisation settings.
If you never saved the page, our guide to reopening a closed browser tab explains how history can help you find it.
