Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Essentials bundle – The Kindle Paperwhite is the best Kindle e-reader, in our opinion, and this is a rare discount that also comes with a decent case and a charger. It’s got that wonderful sharp screen you can read in the sun, and the wonderful advantage of not distracting you with phone notifications every five seconds so you’ve got a fighting change of actually reading a book without getting distracted.
Apple Macbook Air: This is a rare price drop on what I think is the best laptop for seniors. Being Apple, it’s still not cheap, but at $849 this is a bargain and will last you for many, many years. It’s really fast with an excellent 13.6inch screen, and being a Mac is (I think) far easier to use than a Windows machine. It’s my machine of choice, and despite being a slightly older model, it’s never once felt slow or sluggish in a year of constant use.
Apple iPad: While the latest iPads are great, they also cost an awful lot. I think this older, but still wonderful iPad is all you need. At just $199 it’s a bargain, and the sharp 10.2inch screen is perfect for watching movies, email and browsing. It’s the perfect size for carrying about (in fact, I prefer it to the more up to date iPads) and doubles as a great video call device for staying in touch.
Amazon Fire HD8 tablet – For just over $50, this tablet running Amazon’s own software is an absolute steal. It’s not the fastest tablet out there, but for watching videos, reading books and a bit of email and browsing, it’s our nightstand go-to and the perfect bedtime device. It’s got surprisingly good stereo speakers, and a bright colourful screen. You can download apps easily, and it’s also a wonderful travel gadget so you’re not squinting at your phone’s smaller screen. It’s rugged, with a grippy plastic back that I actually prefer to the slicker, easier to drop back of most other tablets.
Shark AV2501AE AI Robot Vacuum – Shark’s bagless robot vacuum is a great allrounder, and uses AI to find its way about. It’s a solid workhorse we’ve used for several months, and is consistently delivers decent cleaning – especially at this price, it’s a solid buy.
Amazon Basics ergonomic mouse – If you’re struggling with a trackpad, then this ergonomic mouse is a great alternative – we’ve been using it on and off for several months, and for under $10 it’s a great take anywhere option to make working at a desk easier.
5 Outlet Extender with 4 USB Charging Ports – I’ve added these $10 extenders to several outlets and they’re really handy, giving you a plethora of plugs and USB ports. You can’t charge your laptop with this, but for everything else, it gives you a neat and tidy way to keep your stuff powered up. It’s also really easy to fit – just plug it into a double socket and you’re up and running.
Breville BES870XL Coffee Machine – It’s not tech in any way, shape or form, but my gosh, this Breville Espresso machine is great – and it’s on rare sale as well. I’ve used this pretty much every day for three years, and it’s simply wonderful if you love espresso. If you want to take a step up from Nespresso and create ‘real’ cafe cafe quality coffee at home, this is the best way I’ve found – it’s simple and straightforward to use, but also flexible enough you can learn to make the perfect flat white with it.
Levoit Core300-P Air Purifier – it’s simple, easy to use and really, really effective. I’ve used this in a bedroom and living room for aroun d a year, and it’s been fantastic – even clearing smoke from wildfires within seconds when the east coast was affected last year. It’s rarely on sale, and this is a great buy, with relatively cheap filter replacements it’s cheap to run as well.
Digital Alarm Clock – it’s big and bright enough to easily see, and also shows you the temperature and humidity in your bedroom to ensure you get a great night’s sleep. There are three alarms, and a weekday mode so you can get that all importnant weekend lie in. There’s also a neat wooden effect to it, which elevates it above most of the cheap plastic competition, with multiple color options. I’ve had the black version for several months and swear by it.
